I love Brothers Oxford. It's been my hairdressing salon of choice for six years, and it's always a pleasant, professional environment. I appreciate the excellent, patient advice on colouring my hair for the first time. The result was exactly what I'd hoped for, and I couldn't be more pleased. My only complaint about the environment is that there is an excessive amount of overhead fluorescent lighting. As an autistic person, this is an unbearable situation that is pervasive in shops and on roads now, but I would like to stress that it's only in the past five years that it's been implemented, and such lighting is simply not necessary. It causes visual pain and also makes it more stressful and much harder to process information and communicate haircut/colouring options with my stylist. Having warmer lighting would make the experience a lot more calming, especially for older and for neurodivergent customers. (Fluorescent lighting has become such a way of life in recent years that most people do not realise how stressful it actually is.) I was grateful to the staff, especially Shannon, for understanding my sensitivity and for offering to position me in the darkest corner, but this is really a systemic problem that the company would do well to address on a larger scale. In the context of environmental stressors, the complimentary hand massage felt less like a luxury and more of an essential antidote to the lighting that helped me regulate my nervous system in the salon.
